⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: China (Yao Wang) Note: The human name is in Western order (first name last name).
Age: Is actually 5000+, but looks as though he's in his twenties.
Canon: Axis Powers Hetalia
Canon Point: October 1, 2015 ((Right as his national day/birthday activities were beginning. Festivities for Chinese National Day end 7 days after the 1st.))

Background: Character | Actual Country

Personality:

Yao usually has a cheerful air around him, but when he talks about how much the world has changed he slips into depression. Thinking about his family, or how he used to get along with certain foreign nations, also makes him feel nostalgic. Despite all the modernization China has gone through in recent years, he still can’t get his thoughts out of the past completely, but that’s just the way he is. He is sad to see how the traditional ways are being replaced by new ideals as industrialization continues to expand. Plus he takes pride in the long, rich history and culture that he possesses; it is part of him, after all.

((To sum up China's nostalgia in a nutshell, he truly is like an old man even though he denies it and doesn't look old physically. Like most elderly people, he's nostalgic because he's continually seeing the world he as knows it change and he doesn't like all the changes that have taken place. He's always grumbling and complaining about said changes. A canon example of one of the things he complains of would be how "noisy" the Western nations have become, since he used to have more power than them a long, long time ago (before the Westerners had their guns). Plus the Westerners, especially England, have been the source of his suffering before and it is for that reason China has become more wary of them, as well as suspicious and critical. Returning to the original topic, another reason for China's nostalgic feelings from seeing modernization would be how time has changed his siblings and perhaps even himself, which adds to his being an old man.

As the oldest brother in his family, China expects his siblings to respect and treat him as one, but they usually don't, which upsets him quite a lot. He feels that they should be more grateful to him since he was the one who raised them, but it's not entirely their fault since he CAN be overbearing with all his nagging. Then the way he scolds them as if they were still children adds to the fact that he hasn't quite accepted the fact that his siblings are grown up and can look after themselves. Yao has conflicted emotions when it comes to this matter, because while he should be relieved that they can take care of themselves, he doesn't like the idea of his siblings not needing him anymore. He's worried that they'll eventually push him to the side completely. And one of Yao's fears is being forgotten, both as a country and a person. He wants to be a person that his countrymen can depend on, which he briefly mentions in his character song, "Aiyaa Four Thousand Years." ("Depend on me at any time... Leave everything to me...") ))

On a brighter note, among the things Yao likes are nature, cute things such as Hello Kitty, music, martial arts, good food, and tea. As for his dislikes, he doesn’t enjoy high prices, being called an old man, being overworked, or having people invade his personal space out of the blue. Yao does not like to spend too much money period. In the canon strip where it told how the eldest brother in China has to treat everyone, Yao is shown to be rather reluctant to do so and is later seen by Hong Kong buying everyone cheap things despite the fact that others like Hong Kong always treat him well. In another strip, China stopped his overseas explorations because it cost him too much money. So, yes, China is pretty cheap. Then no matter how many times people call him an old man, Yao will always tell them that they are rude and that he is perfectly young and cool. The reality is, however, that he’s been shown in canon to have poor and un-cool taste in his clothes and he gives sermons to his siblings (though I wouldn’t doubt he’d give sermons to just about anyone) when they cross him (Ilha Formosa ~Beautiful Island~). Should he believe that he is being overworked, he is likely to revolt and his strength rises significantly to the point where he can easily breakdown a wall with his bare fists, or even his forehead (as seen in Hetalia World Series Episode 28). He’s still not as strong as America, but he’s definitely stronger than an average human. China’s also shown to become flustered quite easily and should he think that something is too obscene, he’ll try to censor it—in fact—he’s been shown to censor several things that Hong Kong possessed.

((One of Yao's flaws is that he can be very stubborn and this goes hand in hand with his pride, another flaw of his. While they've also helped him in the past by giving him determination to stand up each time he was knocked down by the other nations or a tragedy, it's also added to his tendency to be somewhat of a control freak, meaning he likes to be the one in charge and hates it when things don't go this way. His stubbornness and pride are also the reason he's argumentative, often trying to force his opinion on others or have someone side with his views. They're also connected to a third flaw of Yao's, an unwillingness to change. He isn't open to change because he's afraid of the unknown and the what-ifs that tend to come with it. In fact, it's Yao's rigidity that annoys the other countries sometimes. To sum that up, "It's like talking to a brick wall," as the saying goes.))

His family includes Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Vietnam, and Thailand (and possibly Mongolia and Tibet), all of whom he has grown distant from in some way as seen in their histories with one another. The relationship between China and Japan is the most significant family relationship as well as one of the most covered in canon. China found a child Japan and raised the child as his younger brother, but as Japan grew up he also grew more distant until he finally broke away from China by slashing him in the back, leaving behind a large scar both physical and emotional, which began the First Sino-Japanese War. From that point, their relationship went downhill as China and Japan continued to engage in conflict with one another through wars, including World War II. However, they do get along in present times as shown in canon, with a few arguments here and there. They visit each other’s homes and eat together sometimes, though China is very picky on how he eats his food so in turn he tries to tell Japan how to “properly” eat his food and how much soy sauce he should put on his food and what foods shouldn’t be on the same plate and how he shouldn’t reach over the table and and and… But truly, he still cares for Japan even though there are still tensions between their countries and China still cries over Japan’s betrayal sometimes as shown by the end of The Story of China and Teensy Japan. Despite the fact that he tries to treat Japan like he’s still a little kid and that he doesn’t like how much Japan has changed, China still treasures the gifts he receives from Japan as heard in the mini drama, Asian and Western Festivals, but there are also times where he gets pissed off at Japan’s actions (like the little Buddha statue in the Christmas Advent Calendar). However, when China does get pissed off at Japan, he can be easily mollified if the latter presents a treat or an even better gift to him. Other relationships that have been covered in canon are those that China holds with his other siblings Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.

Nowadays, China and Hong Kong’s relationship is pretty strained due to the latter wanting independence. In canon, when Hong Kong brought up the matter, China went into a frenzy and was desperate to keep Hong Kong from leaving. Though China would deny it, he is especially bossy when it comes to Hong Kong as it was revealed that China “meddles” with his filmmaking, he gives strange food to Hong Kong sometimes, and China censors many of his things as mentioned earlier. It’s not that Hong Kong hates China or vice versa, it’s just that China is too overbearing sometimes and he doesn’t seem to be aware that it gets on his siblings’ nerves. But despite the recent awkward moments between them, China still gets along with Hong Kong. To China, Hong Kong could be considered the annoying little brother who’s often causing mischief since he’s a normal target for Hong Kong’s teasing. China may be irritated by Hong Kong’s actions and want for freedom, but they still eat together, it’s just that China still treats his siblings as if they were still small children. It’s more of a dysfunctional relationship than a really negative one, the same goes for China’s relationship with Taiwan.

China and Taiwan’s relationship is not a negative one either, but more of a dysfunctional one as just mentioned. Just as Hong Kong is the little brother who always causes trouble for big brother China, Taiwan is the little sister who always argues with big brother. China can never get Taiwan to follow most of the things he tells her to do since she constantly back talks to him, much to his annoyance. He can never bother Japan when Taiwan is around either since she will come to Japan’s defense. However, China kind of underestimates his little sister sometimes considering he didn’t think that she would be strong enough to twist his back as she popped his shoulder back into place (Asian and Western Festivals). Just like with Hong Kong, China is also normally teased by Taiwan as she often calls him old and un-cool no matter how many times he tells her that he is “young, cool, and hip.” Also like the situation with Hong Kong, it’s not that China hates Taiwan, he’s just annoyed by her headstrong attitude and wishes that she’d show him more respect as her older brother. Despite everything, many of China’s tourists practically swarm to her country, especially her souvenir shops. Then of course he visits her himself and they eat together, or celebrate Asian holidays together.

China and Macau’s relationship, on the other hand, seems to be the most peaceful one compared to the relationships China has with the rest of his siblings, judging by what has been revealed in canon so far. China is more patient with Macau than he is with Hong Kong and Taiwan since Macau doesn’t argue with him as much. China has not been seen arguing with Macau so far canon-wise, in fact, Macau has been shown to act as a mediator when China and Hong Kong get into arguments. To China, Macau is the good little brother who helps keep him sane as he deals with the teasing he receives from the other siblings. However, China and Macau’s relationship is not completely perfect since even Macau can get on China’s nerves by expressing his disgust at China’s poor fashion sense (but of course China thinks he has very good fashion sense).

Now for a relationship outside the family, such as the one between China and Russia. China feels uneasy when Russia’s around and he doesn’t trust him much as he once said that he had a feeling Russia was going to come along and stab him in the back. From what canon showed, China’s prediction was right since Russia took off his panda disguise and asked him in disbelief as to how he found out. Until then, China seems to have been unaware that the giant panda that followed him around was actually Russia. However, China does seem to tolerate Russia sometimes since they were riding together in the plane that Russia jumped from and they weren’t arguing, or fighting.

America shouldn’t be left out either. From what is seen in canon, America and China seem to get along alright. After all, they’re important business partners in real life and while they were stranded on the island they talked about opening a resort hotel there together. However, China is shown to be appalled by America’s diet of junk food, claiming them to be unhealthy, which they are since candy and chocolate—though tasty—are not exactly healthy. Like Japan, China is also reluctant to eat America’s cakes due to all the fluorescent colors. In the Allies’ group song “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” America shows the rest of the Allies his ‘delicious’ Christmas cake only to have the other Allies look at it quizzically. China even says, “Uu… What an incredible color, aru…”

China is also quite skilled in other arts such as poetry and--well--art. In I, Like, Wannabe Free he expressed his sadness through a poem that was originally written by Yuan Kai, a Chinese poet from Shanghai who lived during the Ming Dynasty. Despite Hong Kong saying that is not China’s style to express his emotions, all that matters is that China is capable of doing it. China is also shown to be quite the artist as he is capable of drawing things from beautiful human beings to a strand of hair as seen in canon, though canon also reveals that his anime art doesn’t compare well to Japan’s and Korea’s.

Then of course China is a great chef when it comes to Chinese food! He makes sure that every bite is full of flavor and he can make beautiful, delicious desserts. The problem is, though, that he makes dining one of his top priorities, even putting fine dining before important meetings. Another negative aspect about China is that he has a tendency to nag if he believes someone is not doing their task correctly, or if they are being lazy, and plenty of other trivial reasons. To make matters words he’s oblivious to the fact that all his complaining annoys others. He can also be quite hypocritical. He claims to be one that doesn’t waste time, but Russia reveals that China actually naps in the sun often, or practices tai chi in the morning, and even China once said that he’d rather sleep and eat all day during holidays. He was also shown to have no qualms about taking advantage of Prussia when he sold the other nation a panda, claiming that it would make him happy when in reality China was playing a prank on Prussia for April Fools. But like everyone else, China has his weaknesses. One definite weakness is his tendency to have backaches. If they’re bad enough they will seriously hinder his progress in getting things done. It may even immobilize him for a bit. Also, China is characterized as being very superstitious despite not being religious, and being superstitious he has also been said to be gullible as he buys products off of one of America’s “promotional things.”

Overall, China is a pretty cheerful person most of the time, despite his poor tastes and his stubbornness. But let it be known that under that cute smile is a rather hypocritical, cheap, superstitious, nagging old man at heart who is skilled in the martial arts, the cooking arts of Chinese cuisine, and the fine arts such as poetry. His thoughts will most likely never be completely out of the past, but as long as his country continues to prosper it won’t kill him to have one foot in the past and the other in present times. ((As for whether China is more of an extrovert or introvert, he's neither of the two extremes, really. Most of the time he tends to be in the middle. However, whether he's more extroverted or introverted can also depend on his mood. For example, if he's in a bad mood he'll most likely want to be alone so he can sulk in peace, or if it isn't too serious, he'll complain to Hong Kong, or Macau, or whoever happens to be nearby at the time. If he's happy, then he's going to want to go out and spend time with friends.))

Abilities:

Being a personified country gives Yao these abilities:
1) Longevity and Fast Healing: As the personification of China, so long as the country and its people are doing well, Yao's wounds can heal quickly, though it has been shown that not all of his wounds fully heal; some of them become faint scars. Back home, his healing powers could even save him from a permanent death. Therefore, this ability needs to be weakened. For the cap on his healing abilities, obviously he won't be reviving on his own and his wounds will still heal faster than normal, just not by country standards. For example, if he breaks his leg, it'll take 2-3 weeks to heal rather than a few seconds. His healing powers won't be able to save him from death if the injury is serious enough, though.

2) Heightened Physical Capabilities: Yao's speed and strength are above that of an average human's. As already mentioned in the personality section, he's not as strong as America in terms of physical strength, but it does tend to skyrocket if his anger boils over enough. When that happens, he's able to break down a wall with his fists and a kick, or even with his forehead. This ability will also be weakened. So no more breaking down walls by physical means since he can probably do that with his own negative emotions if he's in an area filled with people who also harbor negative emotions. However, he can still deliver some hard blows in a fight and run at a slightly above average pace.

Personal abilities that Yao improved himself are:
-Master of Chinese martial arts and weaponry.
-Vast knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), which includes acupuncture and tui na (massage).
-Some experience with alchemy, especially on how to make gunpowder. It also adds to his knowledge of TCM.
-Good architect. He did build the Great Wall of China, along with all those Chinatowns he has around the globe.
-Well-taught in his country's arts, from war to literature.
-Great cook

Alignment: Peromei. There were so many other choices that could have worked too, but China's character song "Aiyaa Four Thousand Years" is what won me over, especially those very last two verses. Five thousand years is a long time to live, even for a country. Judging by China's history, there were many times in his life where he just hit rock bottom and thought he'd disappear, only to regain hope upon seeing how his people would pick up the pieces and rebuild each time. He's seen the worst of humanity and its best. It's the best of humanity that give him the courage to dare to continue hoping for a day when everyone can "gaze at the same moon." I'm sure he knows better than anyone how important it is for a country to have hope, even if it's only a little. Absence of hope can lead to the death of a country.

Other: In canon, it's been shown that China has a panda head-shaped birthmark right above his rear. ((Original scanlation source.)) Also, he tends to say "aru" at the ends of some of his sentences unless he's speaking his native tongue.

⌈ SAMPLE SECTION ⌉

Sample: ((This is an original sample that I've typed for this app.))

[The question that China wishes to ask everyone today is a personal and sensitive one. He’d thought about trying to alter his voice and use audio, but there was no way for him to get rid of that “aru” unless he spoke his native tongue, so he concentrates on sending a “text message” to the public instead.]

How many of you here have brothers and sisters? Do you get along with them? Are they older? Younger? Same age?

[Back in China’s small home, he notices that the smaller branches from the giant tree wrapped around his multi-floored building complex are starting to wilt. While he did find it fascinating that he could manipulate certain parts of his surroundings with his emotions, he was discovering the flaws rather quickly; one of them was how much harder it was to hide and/or fake his emotions. His culture taught him that to show too much emotion is considered a weakness. That one must keep his composure at all times, but even more so in public. Over time, China had grown quite skilled of putting on a mask of happiness when his true emotions were something different. Now, though, even if he were to put on his mask his surroundings would betray him as they picked up his emotions. It was like an invasion of his privacy, one that made him more vulnerable. He hated feeling vulnerable, which is why he tries to concentrate on other matters while remaining anonymous.

Being in Verens for this long has allowed him time to think back on his family situation back home. They were somewhat better now than in the past, but tensions still ran high among them. He tried not to think back on his mistakes that contributed to their troubling relationships, but now that he had no more political meetings to attend and no government officials breathing down his neck, it allowed him time to reflect more deeply on such matters.
]

I was close with my siblings when we were younger, but now it's different.

[China takes another glance at the tree branches only to find that they have fallen off and are now shriveled up on his floor. Then when he looks up towards the ceiling, he sees that one of the light bulbs has gone out, making him sigh. Now he'd have to go buy more.]
